4 Social Media Trends to look out for in 2017!

We regularly question and discuss around this topic: What will the future of social media look like? You might already be familiar with the way our social media industry has changed in 2016 — several new features added, a change in consumer preferences etc. Looking forward into 2017, we have analyzed and narrowed down a few of the social media trends that you should keep your eye on this New Year!


  1. The rise of live video content


It is clear that there is now a real shift in social media storytelling. As seen from the success of YouTube, Snapchat, Facebook Live etc., live video content is now prioritized as the authentic way to connect with followers and it has gathered more engagement than any other content format. Even news sources nowadays are beginning to cite Facebook Live for real-time coverage of major events! More developments that you should get excited about would be Live 360 on Facebook that was recently launched, whereby viewers can totally immerse in the surroundings of what they watch — even from behind their screen.

  1. The Battle of the Artificial Intelligence lenses & filters

From the iconic (or perhaps, over-used?) dog filters to puking rainbows, there is no doubt that Snapchat’s selfie lenses have created an overwhelming sensation in 2016.

And of course, we can expect other social media platforms to catch up with the trend and compete with these filters once unique to Snapchat. We have already seen Facebook experimenting with lenses and masks for their Facebook Live users, and we believe that the battle of the facial filters could really heat up in 2017!

  1. The Mainstreaming of Chatbots

Customer service through social media is huge already, but we believe that it would grow even bigger in 2017. The convenience of social media also means that people bring their complaints onto social media when they are on the go, without further hesitation. Any delay or unresponsiveness to these complaints on social media would reflect badly on the company! With this, more companies are turning to Chatbots to communicate with their customers or answer frequently asked questions. This allows customers to reach the assistance that they need faster and easier, rather than being placed on hold or having to wait for a returned email.


  1. Social Media Advertising becomes more powerful than it already is

Thankfully, the internet has given small and big businesses the opportunity to expand their sales volumes and reach out to their customer base even more effectively. People come onto social media to follow personalities as well as brands so engaging in social media advertising might just be one of the best moves you can do for your business this year!

Even brands such as Sony have worked with our Alpha, Brianna (@briannawonggg) to reach out to their target audience using social media campaigns!

Whooshhhh time’s been passing way too fast, can you believe 2-0-1-6 is just in a matter of days?! With 2015 coming to an end, let’s put aside some time as we reflect on all the moments we had this year, whether they’ve been good or bad 🙂

As for Churp Churp, we are glad to say it’s been pretty smooth-sailing for us…here are some highlights of the year and the fun times we had!

A peek into Nuffnang’s financials

Hello Everyone,

Today, as I was updating my personal plans for 2015, I received news that misinformation about Nuffnang, one of Netccentric’s core businesses, has been spreading on social media.

I’m intrigued by the sudden interest in the financial aspects of our businesses, especially as we count down to the New Year, and thought it presented a WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY to share, with those interested, MORE!

All information that I’m sharing with you today is publicly available, but the purpose of this clarification is to tell you WHERE to look. ☺

What is Netccentric?

Netccentric is the group of businesses that both Timothy Tiah and I founded in 2006. We started it with S$65,800.

  1. We have offices in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Australia, China and the UK.
  2. We have about 200 full-time employees.
  3. Netccentric has over a dozen social media-related subsidiaries including: Nuffnang, ChurpChurp, Ripplewerkz, Reelity.TV and, mobile blogging application, Dayre.
  4. We have not received any outside funding.
  5. We have no loans from banks or financial institutions.
  6. The company has grown organically using self-generated profits over the years.
  7. No further capital was injected, hence our paid up capital of Netccentric is still $65,800.

Below, is a simplified corporate organizational chart of our company.


Why talk about Netccentric when people are asking about Nuffnang?

Without doubt, Nuffnang is the most recognizable brand within the Netccentric group.

However, Nuffnang tells only one part of the story.

Because of how we have structured the companies, its financial health, and that of the group, can only be ascertained by understanding Netccentric Pte Ltd’s CONSOLIDATED group numbers.

WOW! Does that mean you are going to tell me how much Netccentric makes and has in the bank account?

Erm, no.

The group has a complicated structure with lots of accounting and reporting lines.

There is no requirement for the group to be audited, so we only have internal consolidated numbers, which are for internal consumption.

Then what are you going to give us!!!???

I will give you just a snapshot of our business’s performance in two key markets: Singapore and Malaysia. (A significant proportion of our revenue comes from five other countries BUT I’m happy to share our Singaporean and Malaysian figures.)

Netccentric, Nuffnang, now Nom Nom???

As I mentioned before, we have over a dozen subsidiaries, so it’s not easy to explain.

But, in Singapore and Malaysia, ALL REVENUE that we make for NUFFNANG AND CHURPCHURP, is billed through NOM NOM MEDIA.

We consider revenue from Churpchurp as relevant, because Nuffnang sells our influencers’ blogs, but Churpchurp handles all their other social media platforms. Revenue from Reelity.TV is negligible at this point, since it is a startup.

Nom Nom Media, the official digital media reseller for Nuffnang and ChurpChurp in Singapore and Malyasia, is a fully-owned subsidiary of Netccentric.

Put another way, Nom Nom Media is the sales agent of Nuffnang and ChurpChurp in Singapore and Malaysia.

Below is a chart that illustrates the relationship between Nom Nom, Nuffnang, ChurpChurp, and ReelityTV.



As you can see, all money received for influencer marketing campaigns is billed through Nom Nom Media. The profit we make, therefore, does not rely on one company, but all three together. At the same time, our cash in bank balances, should be a sum of all three and not one.

What about 2014?

2014 has been an extraordinary year for Netccentric.

We have seen GROUP CONSOLIDATED Revenues rise in excess of 25%! (I’m being conservative, because they are unaudited as yet.) Profits have seen EVEN BETTER growth.

All of this has been achieved on the back of a diversified business built on sound values and principles, a wonderful and dynamic young team, and our industry partners and clients.

Final note

Writing out this note at the end of the year with so much happening around us has left me in a pensive mood.

I am happy and proud of our achievements as a company, but all this must be taken in context of what is happening elsewhere.

I am proud that a staff-driven initiative for Malaysian flood relief has been executed on our Nuffnang Malaysian blog network just today. I do hope it will drive donations and awareness to our chosen partner charity, Mercy Malaysia.

In addition to that, I ask you all, to give a moment of prayer and thought for the families and loved ones of the victims on board Air Asia QZ8501.

Hello Churpers!

It’s been a while eh? Well, we’re back with something exciting for you guys again! Like… A new way to earn some extra rewards!
We’ve recently launched something called the Facebook Seeding, which is very similar to Social Seeding. Let Churpie walk you through the process!

1. If you’re the lucky chosen Churper, you’d see the campaign on your Rewards Page

2. Read through the instructions, and don’t forget to authorize your Facebook Page!

3. Draft your sample message as per how you’d draft a Social Seeding message (but YAY! No word limit this time round cause it’ll be posted onto Facebook)

4. Send in for approval and check back for email for approval

5. Once approved, copy message and post it to your Facebook timeline (Please ensure that your post is set as “Public”!)

6. Retrieve the permalink of your post (to retrieve, look for timestamp of your posting and click into it) and submit it via the campaign page

7. TADAH! Wait for your rewards to be credited!

Relief for Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda – Do your part and donate

Dear Churpers,

Typhoon Haiyan (also known as Typhoon Yolanda) has taken over the news ever since it hit the Philippines on the 8th of November 2013, where more than 600,000 people have now been displaced by the storm across the country and with no access to food, water or medicine. The numbers of the dead and injured are in the thousands now, and worse still, the list keeps getting longer every day.

We are deeply saddened by this tragedy, but there’s more we can do than to keep them in our prayers. As such, Churp Churp is organizing a regional donation drive to raise funds for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan, and we urgently appeal to all of you in our wonderful Churp Churp community to come together and do our part to help those in need.

From now till 22 December 2013, you can do your part and contribute to our fund in just a few simple steps, by donating either a portion of your Churp Churp earnings, or via Paypal!

1. Head over to your Churp Churp dashboard.

2. Look for the “[URGENT] Donate to help the victims of Typhoon Haiyan!” campaign and click it.

3. Choose the denomination you would like to donate. The options are: $2, $5, $10 and $50. Please tick the box if you would like to donate anonymously. (We will be featuring the names of all the donors at the end of this campaign, in recognition of your generosity).

4. You will receive a confirmation email.

5. The amount will then be deducted from your current earnings.

There! Imagine that, with these 5 easy steps, you could easily help a starving child, a sick man or a dying woman.

Alternatively, you can also click on the link choose to donate via Paypal, where you can choose from a total of 12 charities to contribute to.

If you’ve been thinking, “I should do something to help the victims of this disaster”, well, today is the day you stop thinking, and start doing! The collection period for this donation drive is from the 22nd of November to the 22nd of December 2013, after which we will donate the total amount raised to Red Cross Philippines.

Help Us Get To Know You Better!

With more than 17,000 active Churpers around the country, it sure ain’t easy for us here at Churp Churp to get acquainted with each and every one of you. However, all hope is not lost as we came up with a way for us to get know you a little better with just a few clicks of your mouse!

First, click on the Manage Account tab on the toolbar to access your account preferences.

General Account Settings
If you haven’t already connected your social media accounts to Churp Churp, now’s the perfect time to do so! This will make campaign sharing a breeze as you can share campaign messages across multiple platforms with just one click.
Also, we added a section where you can add in your blog or website URL and share with us what other media platforms you are currently on so you’ll be the first in line to participate in the latest campaigns from us!

Please also make sure you update your Personal Details below so that we can assign campaigns that best fit you and your target audiences. For security reasons, we will need you to write in to our helpdesk should you wish to edit your payee name, IC number or address ya!

Account Preferences
We also made some tweaks to the Preferences tab where you can now tell us a little bit more about yourself in terms of your Language Preferences and Education level. This will surely come in handy in future campaigns to come!

Please also let us know your campaign preferences here so we can select the best type of campaigns for you to participate in!
