#FeatureFriday – Lawrence Wong: Everyone’s favourite actor and now… Singer!

Immaculately groomed at all times, Lawrence may seem cool and aloof to most people who don’t know him well enough. He himself admitted that he might be slow to warm up, but once he does, he sure opens up quite a bit. For those of you who have just been admiring him from afar, we shall now give you a sneak peek into his deepest thoughts and feelings, hehehe. Okay, just kidding. But we did ask him a few questions to help you guys get to know him a little better, especially with the launch of his new EP in Singapore.

Oh, and did we mention, there’ll be a juicy giveaway at the end of this post! So… Read on!

1. What are some of the challenges faced with your EP?

Honestly, there were so many challenges. I am primarily an actor and now I have to break pass the stigma of “an-actor-trying-to-be-a-singer-so-his-singing-must-suck” and convince everyone to listen to my songs and what I have to say musically! In acting I can use my body language and expression other than my voice to bring across messages and convey feelings, but now I can only rely on my vocals. It’s a transition I have to get used to and be comfortable with.

2. Till date, which character that you’ve filmed is your favourite, and why?

I still love the first character I played in my first ever telemovie, “The Promise” shown on Channel U, the most. Both the female lead (Julie Tan) and I were new, the script was great, we had a fantastic director and team and I think the whole filming experience basically felt like I was falling in love! I can never forget that good feeling I felt while playing that role.

3. Do you prefer singing or acting?

It’s hard to choose. I honestly like both. I have a natural talent in acting and I enjoy the process of creating a character and escaping into his world. Singing requires more work and is also more trying than acting for me, but I love music and have been humming, screaming, and mumbling songs and melodies for as long as I can remember!

4. What is it like always shuttling back and forth between Singapore and Malaysia for work?

Extremely tiring and requires a lot of determination. It’s tiring because of all the traveling and I drive! Hence, one way trip is usually a continuous drive of 4 hours. When I was younger, I didn’t feel the strain that much, but now that I’m older, I’m not sure how long I can keep it up, haha. It also requires a lot of determination because you will question yourself if it’s worthwhile all the time and there will be some moments you might even feel like giving up. However, I believe that the amount of hardship you can take determines the kind of person you will become.

5. As a child, what have you always aspired to be?

As a child, I had aspired to be many different things. An engineer, an architect, a doctor, a vet etc etc. My mind changes all the time. LOL

6. Which has been your favourite social media platform so far?

Instagram! I think I am one of the early users of Instagram. I love following people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds and have a glimpse of how their life is over at their side.

7. If you could post one last photo on your Instagram, what would it be?

A happy, loving, black and white photo of me and my cat, Esky. We would be imprinted forever in the digital world.

8. We see you’re more of a “Cat” person. Tell us a little more about Esky!

Personality wise, Esky is very sweet, affectionate and manja! He loves attention, loves to be pet and groomed and follows me around the house. Esky is like a family member to me. He has been through a lot of ups and downs in my life with me. The most important thing is, he needs me! After a long, hard day at work, especially when you are feeling down and you come home to someone who needs you, at least you feel like you still have a purpose in life.

9. Tell us a little more about your family!

I come from a normal family with doting parents and a younger brother and sister. Normal is good. It’s a huge blessing in fact. I’m blessed to have my family.

10. Would you consider yourself a neat or messy person?

I’m quite a neat person. I can’t stand it if my house is dirty and messy. That’s why I actually spend quite a lot of time doing housework. I have a habit of vacuuming my house in the wee hours past midnight! I think I get this side of me from my parents who are two of the tidiest and cleanest people around. They are so good at cleaning and tidying and organizing the house that I feel they should open and run a cleaning agency.

You’d never believe the lengths these brands will go to advertise

The advertising world is full of clever comebacks and the 1 thing we learnt from the following examples is to never be the first to start a war you don’t have the arsenal to finish!

American Apparel decided to take on Hurricane Sandy… they got blown away by category 3 level of HATE comments almost instantly.
It’s really not hard to see why.

Tacobell decided to round up more than 20 real-life people with the name Ronald McDonald who magically gave rave reviews of their new breakfast menu.

It has garnered more than 2.2 million views so far.

McDonalds reacted quickly by uploading this to its Facebook –

FYI, Tacobell’s old mascot was a Chihuahua.

We say well done McDonalds and Tacobell, BURN!!!

The Facebook post has since garnered over 8k likes and it is undeniable that both brands have benefited from their “breakfast war” especially on social media!

BRANDS VS. PUBLIC SAGA

While everyone was busy leaving HATE comments and threatening to kill Anton Casey, these brands took the whole saga to a new level of AWESOME.

Briton Anton Casey was under public scrutiny after he implied that Singapore public transport users were poor. Needless to say, it went viral. In the worst possible way.

As sensitive as this case was, Scoot and the Tuckshop bar took turns to take swipes at the poor chap

I don’t know about you but being “poor” seems like a better deal with great offers like these, don’t you think?

BRANDS VS. CONSUMER

Cafes have been sprouting all over Singapore like daisies and we have all become armchair critics, sharing our two cents worth about the food, ambience and price with every visit.

And sometimes, being brutally honest can have really brutal consequences.

Take Instagram user Daphne for example who shared to her social media platforms about Roosevelt’s (Diner&Bar) cuppa coffee –

She tried to channel her inner Gordon-Ramsey when she commented.  Roosevelt’s was clearly displeased with the horses’ piss association and decided to call Daphne out while promoting their people to try their coffee to prove people otherwise.

We’re not taking sides on this dispute because we haven’t tried the coffee personally… we’re just wondering how she knew what horse piss tastes like.

Not that we really want to know either.
